A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2013.

Everly, my tiny dancer, you fill my heart with so much happiness. Every day we put on a record and dance around the living room. Sometimes you like to sit on my left hip as I jive and spin - you cling to me tightly and grin widely, shouting 'Wheeee!'. Sometimes we take a dolly or teddy each and get our groove on. Today you ran to the coat stand, pointing up and exclaiming 'Hat! Hat!', so I took down Daddy's caps and we wore one each as we danced around the room to Bob Marley.

melbourne and daylesford: time to relax

After our little holiday in the mountains, we reached our destination - my sister's home in Melbourne. My niece Ilsie is only 11 week's younger than Everly so it was a delight to see the cousins side by side again (the first time since Christmas), holding hands everywhere they went, playing together happily (and fighting over toys, but that's expected!). And, of course, I finally got to have big bear hugs with Ilsie, which is ten times better than our usual FaceTime calls!

The girls both nap after lunch so we took advantage of this by spending our mornings out and about - takeaway coffees from Wee Jeanie in Yarraville while Everly and Ilsie had fun at the playground, followed by a stop at Plump grocery to collect organic supplies; shopping at the CERES market and enjoying a delicious organic lunch in their café; a super quick coffee at Seven Seeds (unfortunately we only lasted there five minutes as it wasn't child friendly at all) and a delightful change-of-plans lunch at my favourite Melbourne café, Auction Rooms (luckily only a short drive away from Seven Seeds and much more accommodating with high chairs and pencils and papers for the kids). Of course, I have no photo evidence of any of the above as I was having too much fun to bother lugging the SLR about! Our afternoons were then free for relaxing about the house, and with a few extra pairs of hands available I was actually able to put my feet up and read some books I'd borrowed from the library and packed in my suitcase - a favourite pastime of mine and something I've been aching to do for almost two years. Our time in Melbourne was too short - I miss my sister already! But hopefully they will come visit us in June for Everly's second birthday.

On the drive home we decided to stop over in Daylesford for a few nights, a country town known for its natural mineral springs, beautiful mountain scenery and lush green surroundings. We stayed in a cute little cottage with a roaring wood fire and a large enclosed backyard so Everly could explore safely. She spent the first afternoon navigating her way up and down the rickety wooden steps, clinging onto the trellis. We picked flowers from the garden, using a drinking glass as a vase, and ate our dinner outside on the deck. The following day we visited the lake and fed ducks our old bread. We found ourselves in a cozy café on the main street called Larder where I devoured the most amazing roast turkey sandwich I've ever eaten; it was so good we ate lunch there three days in a row. (From all of our travels within Australia and internationally, we now know that when you find a good place to eat, you run with it!) On our final day it was cold and wet, so we stoked the fire and stayed indoors. It was the perfect place to end our holiday, and I'm glad I pulled the camera out to capture some of our time there. (And props must go to my clever husband Mark who took all the photos of Everly in her raincoat, including this one - all such stunning shots!)

I made the conscious effort to clear my mind while I was away and had banned myself from using Instagram or Facebook or checking my favourite blogs. Coincidentally, my iPhone mysteriously stopped working in Halls Gap so I literally had no phone/internet for the whole time we were away, and it's still being repaired now. Normally this would put me in a bit of panic, but it was surprisingly very liberating! It really helped me centre myself and to clear all that stuff floating about in my head (and I amazingly 'found' lots of spare time to read books!). I am sleeping better now and my anxiety has almost disappeared. I've finally realised how affected I am by outside stimulation, and how important it is that I monitor it. I will definitely be making a habit of scheduling regular social media free blocks throughout the year. I'm also finally doing what I've wanted to do for many years and booking myself in for meditation and yoga courses. I'm really looking forward to this new journey!

the grampians: space to breathe

While I was having a little blog sabbatical, we ventured on a holiday to visit my sister and her family in Melbourne, stopping off at Halls Gap in the Grampians for a couple of nights to break up the long drive. It definitely provided the open space and fresh air I needed to breathe deeply and clear my head.

We stayed in a lovely place called Grampians Blue, nestled in the valley between the souring mountains, with a huge wall of glass opening out to the backyard of bushland where we saw kangaroos, emus, magpies, cockatoos and rosellas daily. Sitting on the lounge you could stare up past the treetops to the mountains and the Pinnacle. Everly was delighted by the 'Hop hops', and she was quickly referring to the birds as 'Peck peck'. (We may or may not have told her she shouldn't get too close incase they peck her... hmmm!)

The first day we arrived it was a stiflingly hot 38 degrees so we didn't venture too far from the nest but instead enjoyed the mountain views and wildlife from our airconditioned abode. The next day was much cooler so we visited Boroka Lookout which gave us a stunning view of the Wonderland and Mount William Ranges and a bird's eye view of the Halls Gap village nestled in between.

Then we popped Everly in the Ergo and took a hike to view the beautiful MacKenzie Falls, where Everly clung to the fence with both hands and said 'Wow!'. (In other news, I think I can safely say I'm the only person that has dealt with a poo explosion on the observatory deck overlooking the MacKenzie falls?! All I can say is thank god I threw a spare nappy and wipes in my bag at the last minute...)

While we rested and prepared ourselves for the hike back to the car, Everly ran back and forth between the path and deck, squealing with laughter. She finds so much joy in simple pleasures - a lesson in life I'm trying to relearn from her every day.

Standing at the gate to our little cottage in Daylesford, absolutely entranced by people and cars going past. After our time away, Everly has taken to exclaiming 'Hello!' and waving to everyone (and every dog) she sees, a big deal for our little shy girl, so she is obviously very fascinated by this social custom.

I love this photo as it captures a moment in time, just after we'd hiked the path to view the beautiful MacKenzie Falls in the Grampians. Pure joy as Everly ran back and forth from the path to the observatory deck, stopping at each turn to laugh out loud (and of course to check Mummy and Daddy were watching, the true show pony that she is!). A gentle reminder of how the great outdoors and a little laughter can be so much fun.

A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2013.

This week has been rough. Everly was super clingy, then she came down with a fever and nasty cold. Plus, my anxiety reared its ugly head out of nowhere, then my insomnia hit, so basically I'm just plain ol' tired. I didn't pick up the camera once, nor my iPhone, but I had nothing of interest to photograph anyway as we have been cooped up in the house most of the week.

Above are some cute captures from my husband's phone of Everly trying on a very special gift from the lovely Greer at Typically Red - a beautiful bumpy bonnet in soft purple wool. (I entered a giveaway and was one of the very lucky winners!) Everly's absolute delight in modelling it for us - despite having a fever, watery eyes and runny nose - is true testament to how lovely this little hat is! I'm sure Everly will not take it off all Winter. Please do pop over to Greer's shop and order your little ones a bonnet for the cooler weather. (Meanwhile, we are having another heatwave in Adelaide and I'm wondering where Autumn is?!)

There will be no These Days post this week, which I'm sure you can understand. I've also decided to take a little blog break for a couple of weeks to recharge. I will still be taking photos when I feel the urge, but my 11/52 and 12/52 portraits will be a little late.

I look forward to checking all my favourite blogs in a fortnight and seeing what you've all been up to! x

My favourite portrait from last week was this beautiful image of the oh-so-tiny baby brother and the big sister over at Megpie, a new (to me) blog I recently discovered.

THESE DAYS

/ Pink blooms all over the house
/ We don't watch much TV in this house (and only ever PlaySchool) so Everly was enjoying her special treat - standing mere centimetres from the screen, as you do! (Notice the hand in the pocket?)
/ One beeswax candle for the birthday boy, and one amazing cake. (Everly is currently obsessed with cake! We have made a few in the past couple of weeks, and we've been reading this lovely children's story a lot lately. The other morning she found some coins on Mark's bedside table, so we told her about money and we inspected the numbers and pictures on each coin. We told her we could put them in her money box so she could buy something one day. I asked her, 'What would you like to buy with your money?' and she quickly exclaimed, 'Cake!'. Oh, this girl is most definitely my daughter!)
/ She loves pockets
/ Mark's empty coffee cup. Mark loves coffee. Me, my addiction comes and goes in waves. I'm currently only having one a week when we go to the bakery on Saturdays.
/ Toes!
/ Her first ever boiled egg. She didn't like dipping the soldiers in the soft egg, but loved it when I spread the cooled egg on her toast.
/ My favourite egg cup (by Donna Wilson)
/ I will never stop loving her curls!
/ Hiding vegetables in banana bread (thank you Claire for recommending this lovely recipe)
/ Fresh from the oven
/ Still obsessed with her stainless steel water bottle (from here)
